KIGALI – The Crested Cranes will take on Rwanda in their last game at the 2018 CECAFA Women’s Championship on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cranes had a decent start to the tournament winning all of their first two games against Kenya and Ethiopia before a demoralizing 4-1 loss to Tanzania on Monday that left them in a nothing but a win situation when they take on Rwanda today.
Faridah Bulega’s team has to win today’s game to stand a chance of lifting their first ever CECAFA Women’s championship and anything less than a victory would mean they will be left to pray for results to go their way in the other fixtures as it would have gotten out of their hands.
They go into today’s game leading the round-robin tournament log with six points, two ahead of Tanzania who also have one game left.
Their main worry is Ethiopia and Rwanda who seat 3rd and 4th respectively with three points each from two games.
“Football goes three ways, you can lose, win or draw, said Bulega ahead of the Rwanda game.
“Against Tanzania, we lost but the girls did all they could against defending champions and we scored an important goal, it’s a plus to us heading into the final game against Rwanda.
“We want to get all three points and bring the trophy home.
We are working hard as the technical team and players, and we have not lost hope.
“We are doing all possible to bring the trophy home.
The Crested Cranes have always fell short in this championship, with their last attempt seeing them finish fourth in their home edition after losing 4-0 to Ethiopia in the 3rd place play-off game.
This is the third time the tournament is being played with Zanzibar winning the first edition in 1986. In 2016, Tanzania won it in Uganda, beating Kenya 2-1 in the final played at Njeru Technical Center.
