
Uganda’s Men and Women teams qualified for the FIBA 3*3 Africa Cup slatted for November in Togo after finishing fourth and third respectively in the qualifiers held in Madagascar.
The Men’s team consisting of National Basketball League stars-Tonny Drilleba, Sunday Okot, Jonathan Egau and Stanley Mugerwa ended the qualification phase with a 5-2 record to finish fourth overall.
Egypt, Madagascar and DR Congo who finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively, are the other men’s teams that qualified to the finals event.
In the Women’s category, Uganda squeezed through qualification by the skin of their teeth despite going into the tourney as one of the favourites.
The team comprised of Zainah Lokwameri, Sarah Ageno, Ritah Imanishimwe and Jamila Nansikombi.
Uganda’s Women finished day one with three losses in as many games after losing to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Madagascar and Egypt, finishing bottom of the pile after the round-robins.
However, the format of the tourney in the women’s category had it that the 4 competing teams play an elimination game after the round Robin – (1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd), with the winner of each game qualifying to the Africa Cup. Losers play another game and the winner of that particular tie qualifies as well.
Uganda lost to DRC who had finished 1st in the round-robin as Madagascar lost to Egypt before Uganda beat up on hosts Madagascar 14-12, joining Egypt and DRC as the three qualified teams.
The African Cup in Lome, Togo will take place from the 9th to 11th of November 2018.
