KABOJA – With just over a month to the start of the new Big League season, money bags Wakiso giants have started their preseason preparations.
Under the watchful eye and guidance of former SC Villa, Lweza and and Mbarara City FC tactician, Ibrahim Kirya, the team conducted its first training session at IUIU University in Kabojja.
All the 22 squad players were present on day one with only Steven Bengo (thigh) and Swaibu Mude (illness) not taking part in the day’s drills.
Wakiso Giants who bought Kamuli Park for Shs 100 Million a few months ago will be targeting promotion to the top tier as confirmed by Kirya after Wednesday’s session.
“The players are new but our aim as coaches is to put them in shape so that they are good to go at the start of the season, said Kirya.
“Our aim is to get promoted to the top tier and we hope to achieve that.
“It is good that all the players were present on the first day of training with only two unable to train.
Asked about the challenges of coaching in the Big League after an eternity in the top tier, Kirya had this to say.
“It will be a challenge for me to coach in the big league but it all remains football with the same basics, continued Kirya.
“The stadiums are not the best but this league is the same as Masaza Cup where i was also told that i might not succeed.
“At the end of the day, you just have to install your philosophy in the players and then get the results.
“Luckily for me, all the player i have recruited have been with me at some stage and we know each other inside and out.
Wakiso Giants have been on a spending spree this off season, acquiring 22 players, most of whom have top tier experience and some already featured for the National team at some point in their careers.
It will be a big task for them as the Big League provides stiff competition coupled with huge financial implications but looking at the top management of the club, it would be fair to suggest that they can prevail over the course of the season.
Despite training in Kabojja, the team will host their home matches at Wakiso Resource center playing field.
