LUGOGO – Vipers SC continued their miserable 2018/19 season as they were dumped out of the Stanbic Uganda Cup on Tuesday.
The Kitende based side who were eliminated from the Caf competitions in the early stages and are currently second in the league, four points behind leaders KCCA FC, lost 2-1 to Proline at the StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo.
Proline who are currently featuring in the Big League scored through Noordin Bunjo and substitute Ibrahim Bonyo while Vipers’ goal came off Tadeo Lwanga’s head.
After a cautious start to the game, Bunjo struck on 24 minutes, justifying Proline’s show of courage in the early exchanges.
With things not going according to plan, Vipers made a first half substitution as Moses Waiswa replaced Steven Mukwala.
Proline went into the break leading 1-0.
Six minutes into the second half, Vipers made their second change as Abraham Ndugwa paved way for veteran striker Hamis Diego Kiiza.
In an attempt to add more fresh legs into the game and also try to see out the 1-0 lead, Proline made their first change with Bunjo coming off and replaced by Hakim Kiwanuka on 56 minutes.
However, that did not work as Vipers upped the tempo with Dan Sserunkuma rattling the cross bar on 63 minutes.
Proline’s best chance to double their lead came 11 minutes later but Bright Anukani missed a free header while an marked in the Vipers area.
As fate would have it, the home side were made to pay dearly as Tadeo Lwanga equalized off a header from Ibrahim Kiyemba’s corner on 75 minutes.
With the two sides locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the game headed into extra time to determine the winner.
In the first 15 minutes of the post regulation time, Vipers were dealt a huge blow as Lwanga was forced off with injury and replaced with Rahmat Ssenfuka.
Vipers hit the cross bar for the second time in the game when defender Halid Lwaliwa headed Moses Waiswa’s corner kick from the right.
Skx minutes to the end of extra time, Bonyo won it for Proline, combining swiftly with fellow substitute Kiwanuka before the former headed in to the net.
Vipers could not mount a serious challenge to find the equalizer as Proline ran out 2-1 winners to storm the Cup semi finals.
The Big League side now join Express FC, Bright Stars and Kyetume in the last four of the competition.
The draws for the semifinal will be held next week.
