BUGEMBE – Wakiso Giants maintained their unbeaten run in the FUFA Big League on Saturday, defeating Bukedea 1-0 on the day.
Troubled former Express, KCCA and SC Villa midfielder, Steven Bengo was the hero on the day, scoring the only goal of the contest.
At the start, it was Bukedea who started strongly, forcing Wakiso goalkeeper into a brilliant save on 4 minutes.
Wakiso who had struggled to get to grips in the game suffered a set-back on 20 minutes as midfielder enforcer Hakim Ssenkumba was replaced by Richard Kigozi after the former KCCA midfielder got injured.
Moments later Yasim Mugume robbed a Bukedea defender, of the ball and set up Bengo whose attempted effort was saved by the goalkeeper.
Three minutes past the half hour mark, Norman Ojik headed a Muwadda cross onto the cross bar as the home side piled on the pressure.
With nine minutes of the first half to play, Bengo who had earlier in the season been suspended by the club, put Wakiso 1-0 up, side footing a poorly defended ball, past the keeper.
By halftime, Wakiso looked to be in close control of the game and holding a slender 1-0 lead.
The second half was a more open contest with both side getting a fair share of goal scoring opportunities.
On 50 minutes, Ojik who did not look lively at all headed wide an Ernest Lubobi well weighted cross while unmarked in the area.
Ojik was guilty of missing another opportunity later on while substitute Isaac Ntege shot wide off a counter, inside the area.
Bukedea also had glorious chances to level the scores but were on more than one occasions let down by lousy finishing.
On the end, it was Wakiso who took home the three points that see them move onto 32 for the season after 14 games.
The Purple Sharks who are still unbeaten this season are edging closer to gaining promotion to the top tier.
For Bukedea, they remain 6th on the standings with 16 points with 6 games to play.
