NAIROBI – Uganda Christian University (UCU) ran out double winners in the just concluded Varsity Basketball Championships that took place in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Mukono based University scooped both the Men’s and Women’s titles in the two day event that was held at the United States International University (USIU).
The Mukono-based outfit defeated Institut Supérieur d’Entrepreneurship et de Gestion (ISEG) from Senegal in the finals (men and women) played on Sunday.
In the men’s final, UCU Canons edged ISEG 14-13 in a closly contested encounter that had the crowd on their feet more often than not.
To reach the finals, the Canons had taken care of USIU in another thrilling encounter.
The team coached by Nicholas Natuhereza had earlier swept aside their opponents in the group stages.
Natuhereza’s side were in pool A alongside Makerere University, the University of Johannesburg and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
The players on the UCU Canons team included Isaiah Mabeny Ater, David Deng Kongor, Caesar Adoke and Titus Lua.
In the ladies categories, UCU Lady Canons defeated ISEG in the final winning 13-8.

Just like the men’s team, the Lady Canons also beat up all their opponents in the group before overcoming the University of Nairobi in the semifinals.
UCU was in group A alongside hosts USIU, KISII (Kenya), Tech (Kenya) and UNIDAF from Senegal.
The four players that led the Lady Canons to success included Maimuna Nabbosa, Rose Akon, Brenda Kayaga and Sarah Ageno.
The two finalist (UCU and ISEG) earned a ticket to the FISU University World Cup that will take place from 31st October to 1st November 2019 at Huaqiao University, in Xiamen (China).
This is the second time that UCU Lady Canons qualify for the World Cup after their maiden appearance in 2017.
