Ismailia Stadium, Ismailia
Tuesday, 25-06-2019
Five time champions and holders Cameroon started their title defence with a comfortable 2-0 win over Guinea Bissau in their opening game of group F at Ismailia Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The indomitable lions dominated the first half period but found it difficult to break down Guinea Bissau defence.
Christian Bassogog had a great opportunity to fire Clarence Seedorf’s side in an early lead but his effort went wide. At halftime breather, it was goalless.
After the break, Cameroon continued to create numerous chances, although they also survived a couple of scares.
Custodian Andre Onana nearly cost his side as his clearance went straight at Frederic Mendy who fired wide. Baciro Cande’s side again went close through Sori Mane’s long range shot.
The holders finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute when Yaya Banana headed perfectly past Guinea Bissau goalkeeper Jonas Mendes.
Three minutes later, substitute Stephane Bahoken made a swift impact by doubling Cameroon’s advantage.
Piqueti Silva also had a decent chance to find a consolation for Guinea Bissau who made their debut at the continental showpiece in Gabon two years ago but headed against the post.
Guinea Bissau introduced on Mama Balde for Toni Silva and Joseph Mendes for Frederic Mendy and Jorginho Fernando Barbosa for Piqueti Silva
Cameroon on the other hand, brought on Clinton N’Jie for Karl Toko Ekambi, Olivier Boumale for Eric Maxim Choupo Moting.
Rudinilson Silva ( Guinea Bissau) and Cameroon duo of Olivier Boumale and Michael Ngadeu were both booked.
