Saturday, 06-07-2019 @10pm
Egypt will continue their quest for a record-extending eighth continental crown with a last 16 contest against 1996 champions South Africa at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Pharaohs have had a great start at the competition, winning all their three group games and are yet to concede. They managed to top group A with 9 points
South Africa on the other hand have struggled so far in the event and are fresh from a 1-0 defeat to Morocco. They managed to reach this stage as one of the four best third-placed teams.
This is the third meeting between the two sides at the Africa Cup of Nations, the Egyptians have won the previous two (1-0 in the group stages in 1996 and 2-0 in the 1998 final).
The Pharaohs have qualified for the next stage in 11 of their 12 games in the knockout phase of the continental showpiece whereas Bafana Bafana have only won two of their previous 18 AFCON games (D7 L9).
Mohamed Salah has been involved in six Egyptian goals in the last 10 AFCON games, four his own and two assists.
Javier Aguirre’s side will also look up to Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim Hassan ‘Trezeguet’ and Ahmed Tarek for progression.
The South Africans will have their hopes in Percy Tau and Bongani Zungu who netted the winner against Namibia.
