Liverpool forward Sadio Mane a brace as Senegal humbled Kenya 3-0 in a group C contest to book a place into the last 16.
The West Africans will now face Uganda in the round of 16 contest on Friday whereas Kenya will have a nervous wait to find out if they qualify as one of the four best third placed teams.
The Lions of Teranga were frustrated in the first period of the contest as Kenyan custodian Patrick Matasi pulled off miraculous saves denying Mane and M’Baye Niang.
At half an hour mark, Senegal were awarded a penalty after Kenyan defender Abud Omar hacked down Saliou Cisse inside the area. Mane stepped up but was horribly saved by Matasi.
Three minutes after the hour mark, Ismaila Sarr gave Senegal the deserved lead with a volley capitalising on a mistake from Kenyan goalie Matasi.
Mane doubled the advantage in the 71st minute with a cool finish after Harambee Stars defender Musa Mohammed failed to deal with a long ball allowing the Senegalese star man a clean run at goal.
In the 78th minute, Senegal were awarded another penalty after Kenya’s Philemon Otieno challenge on Sarr inside the area. The defender was shown a second yellow, Mane redeemed himself from the resulting spot kick.
Mane ( Senegal) and Kenyan duo of Joseph Okumu and Ayub Timbe Masika were booked.
Aliou Cisse introduced on Krepin Diatta for Idrissa Gueye, Moussa Konate for M’Baye Niang whereas Kenya withdrew Dennis Odhiambo for John Avire and Ayub Timbe for Bernard Ochieng.
In the other group C contest, Algeria who made a total of nine changes humbled Tanzania 3-0, thanks to first half goals from Islam Slimani and Adam Ounas brace
The Algerians finished top of the group with 9 points, followed by Senegal on 6 and Kenya in third. This is the end of the road for Tanzania who were making their first appearance since 1980.
The last time the desert foxes won all their three group games was in 1990, they went on to win the continental showpiece.
