Goalkeeper Farouk Ben Mustapha was the hero, coming on for the shootout and saving Caleb Ekuban’s penalty. The custodian replaced Mouez Hassen in the final minute of extra time.
The Tunisians prevailed to the last eight on penalties 5-4 after a 1-1 draw with Ghana in normal time.
They were seconds from an historic win over Ghana but substitute Rami Bedoui headed into his own net with his first touch.
Taha Yassine Khenissi gave the Carthage Eagles the lead in the 73rd minute firing past Richard Ofori from a perfect Wajdi Kechrida’s low cross.
Leeds striker Ekuban was the only player to miss from the spot, with Ferjani Sassi scoring the decisive kick with calmness to send the 2004 champions into the quarterfinals.
Ghana were the dominant side in the first period of the half and had a Andre Ayew goal wrongly disallowed for offside by the assistant referee.
Despite their progression, Tunisia remain winless at this year’s continental showpiece as they have drawn all their four games.
Tunisia who last won the competition in 2004, will face off with surprise package Madagascar who are ranked 108th in the world, in the quarter finals on Thursday.
