LUGOGO – The Uganda National Men’s football team, the Cranes, will face Burundi in the next round of CHAN 2020 qualifiers.
This was confirmed on Sunday after the Swallows completed a double over South Sudan in their first-round tie.
Leading 2-0 from the first leg, Burundi had to come from a goal down to dispatch South Sudan 2-1 at the StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo.
Jose Nyuar put the hosts in the lead inside a minute at the start of the game.
South Sudan held onto their caution till halftime and were just a goal away from leveling the tie.
However, Burundi had other ideas, scoring twice in the second half to regain control of the contest and tie.
Iddy Muselemu’s 67th-minute goal leveled matters on the day before Oliver Dusabe won it with just 6 minutes to play.
The Victory means Burundi win the first round tie 4-1 on Aggregate and will now take on Uganda in the second round of qualifiers.
The Cranes were also double winners in their tie against Somalia.
Abdallah Mubiru’s side defeated Somalia 3-1 away from home before winning the second leg 4-1 on Saturday.
In the second leg, Patrick Kaddu opened the scoring on 3 minutes form the spot before Allan Kyambadde made it 2-0 on 32 minutes.
With just two minutes of the opening half to play, Kaddu scored another penalty to ensure the Cranes held a 3-0 lead at the break.

Three minutes into the second half, Kaddu completed his hattrick, heading in a Mustapha Kizza corner.
Inside the last minute of normal time, Abdullahi Tabul pulled one back for the visitors but it was just good enough for a consolation.
In the end, Uganda who have qualified for the CHAN finals in each of the last four editions, won the tie 7-2 to progress to the next phase of qualification.
In the next round, Burundi will host Uganda on the 20th of September in the first leg while the second (leg) will take place on the 18th of October in Kampala.
