NAMBOOLE –The Uganda Premier League (UPL) secretariat has on Wednesday, August 14th, released the 2019/20 season fixtures.
It was confirmed that 2018/19 league winners KCCA FC will start their title defence at home to newly promoted Wakiso Giants on Saturday, September 1st.
KCCA FC won the league with 66 points last season, 7 ahead of Vipers SC who finished second.
However, that will not be the opening fixture of the league.
The league will start on Thursday, August 29th, with Kyetume at home to SC Villa at Namboole.
Kyetume is another newly promoted side and they had to negotiate through the Big League playoffs to get into the top tier.
For Villa, they are the record League champions with 16 titles to their name and finished 12th last season.
At the ceremony held at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, Bernard Bainamani the UPL Chairperson noted that they always have challenges with club licensing and hence a delay in releasing fixtures.
“We always have licensing issues which delay the fixtures, noted Bainamani.
“Our desire is to have the fixtures ready as soon as possible but it is not in our hands as FUFA has to first grant licenses to all clubs.
“In the end, we are forced to release the fixtures late.”
Match-Day one of the league will run from Thursday August 29th to Saturday 1st September, with all 16 teams in action.
Friday August 30th will see four games with URA FC at home to Maroons FC, Bright Stars will host Vipers SC at Wankulukuku, Express are away to Bul while Onduparaka will be at home to Police.
On Saturday, Tooro United will host Busoga United at Wankulukuku while Mbarara City take on Proline in Luzira.
The first traditional Kampala derby between SC Villa and Express will see the Jogoos host the Red Eagles on Friday, September 13th at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole.
Another stand-out fixture in the first round will see KCCA FC hosting Vipers SC on Saturday, November 16th.
