Petro de Luanda vs KCCA FC
Estadio 11 de Novembro, Luanda
Saturday, 14-09-2019 @6pm
KCCA FC will be hoping for a positive result when they take on Petro de Luanda at the Estadio 11 de Novembro in the CAF Champions League on Saturday.
The Kasasiros have had a good build-up to the game, winning their first two games of the 2019/20 Uganda Premier League season.
Last season, they had a disappointing continental campaign, failing to reach the group stages of the confederations cup.
Having received a bye in the preliminary stages, Mike Mutebi’s side took care of Tanzania’s Mtibwa Sugar 5-1 on aggregate to reach the playoff round.
In the playoffs, KCCA would however fall to Congo’s Otoho Doyo. Having lost 3-0 in the first leg, Mutebi’s side won the second 2-0, losing 3-2 on aggregate in the end.
In the Champions League, KCCA FC’s last appearance came in 2018 when they reached the lucrative group stages of the competition.
In the initial stages, they eliminated CNaPS and Kedus Giorgis in the preliminary and first-round respectively.
However, they were overpowered by Al Ahly and Esperance in Group A, finishing third and bowing out.
With back to back continental experience in the bag, the Kasasiros are favourites to progress into the group stages. However, head coach Mike Mutebi expects a difficult tie.
“We have to be at our best so as to progress to the group stages, noted Mutebi before the team traveled to Angola.
“They may not be the biggest name on the continent but can hurt us so we have to be careful.
“All in all, we have the quality to take care of them, starting with the first leg on Saturday.
KCCA FC will be without the experienced the trio of new recruits John Revita, Erisa Ssekisambu and Keziron Kizito who have all not traveled with the team to Angola.
Julius Poloto is still recovering from a long term injury and is also not part of the team.
Petro de Luanda have made 7 appearances in the Caf Champions League and will be hoping to progress into the group stages for the second time in their history.
Their best performance came in the 2001 edition when they reached the semi-finals of the competition before they were eliminated by Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties.
Their last appearance in the competition saw them get eliminated in the second round by Algeria’s JS Kabylie in 2010.
In the previous round, they eliminated Lesotho’s Matlama 4-0 on aggregate after winning both the first and second legs 2-0.
