It is now Liverpool’s title to lose and indeed it is! The Kops are currently enjoying an 8 point lead at the top of the league and 9 away from two-time defending champions Man City. This is after Jurgen Klopp’s side beat City 3-1 on Sunday evening thanks to goals by Fabinho, Mohammad Salah and Sadio Mane. Bernardo Silva scored City’s consolation goal on the day.
Liverpool now has 35 points from 12 games while City are on 24.
On Saturday, Chelsea moved into third on the log following a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic scored the goals for the Blues who now have 26 points.
Second place is currently occupied by Leicester who defeated Arsenal 2-0 thanks to strikes by Jammie Vardy and James Maddison.
On the same day, Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Sheffield United. Son Heung-Min opened the scoring on the day but the visitors equalized through George Baldock. The results leaves Spurs in 13th spot with just 15 points accumulated so far.
At Old Trafford, Man United thumped Brighton 3-1. Andreas Pereira, Marcus Rashford and a Davy Propper own goal did the damage for United while Lewis Dunk scored Brighton’s only goal.
Elsewhere, Watford beat Norwich 2-0 away from home on Friday to register their first victory of the season, Burnley beat West Ham 3-0, Newcastle defeated Bournemouth 2-1, Everton were 2-1 winners away to Southampton while Wolves scrapped past Aston Villa by the same score-line.
Here are the XI players who stood out according to Shaban Lubega.
GK: Ben Foster (Watford)
For the second week running, Foster gets the nod in between the sticks in my team. The Englishman was once again at his best as Watford registered their first victory of the season, beating Norwich City 2-0 away from home.
RB: DeAndre Yedlin (Newcastle)
Yedlin opened the scoring as Newcastle United beat Bournemouth 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
LB: Andy Robertson (Liverpool)
What a cross to set up Mohammad Salah for Liverpool’s second in the win over City!
CB: Dejan Lovren (Liverpool)
Arguably Lovren’s best performance in a Liverpool shirt since the start of last season. He was a brick-wall all evening as the Kops beat City on Sunday.
CB: Ciaran Clark (Newcastle United)
Scored what proved to be the winner in the victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.
MF: Fabinho (Liverpool)
You cannot strike a ball any better than Fabinho did to open the scoring in Liverpool’s 3-1 win at home to City.
MF: Ruben Neves (Wolves)
Opened the scoring as Wolves defeated Aston Villa 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
MF: James Maddison (Leicester City).
Magnificent! That is the only word to describe Maddison’s performance against Arsenal on Saturday. He also scored the second goal in the 2-0 victory.
FW: Chris Wood (Burnley).
A handful for center backs and was at it again on Saturday as Burnley defeated West Ham 3-0, scoring the second goal.
FW: Anthony Martial (Man United)
The Frenchman set-up two of United’s three goals in the victory over Brighton on Sunday.
FW: Tammy Abraham (Chelsea)
Maintained his push for the golden boot, netting one of Chelsea’s two goals in the win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.
