LUGOGO – UCU Lady Canons moved to within a single victory of winning the 2019 FUBA National Basketball League-Women’s division on Friday night.
It was a dominant display by UCU who trailed only once in the entire game, winning it 68-61 in the end.
After trailing 2-1 at some stage, the Mukono based side has now won the last two games to lead the best of 7 series against JKL Lady Dolphins 3-2.
Rose Akon got the game rolling with the first basket of the night but her side would soon find themselves trailing 4-2 as JKL sunk the next two baskets.
From there, UCU took the initiative, going on a run of 16-02 and taking the first quarter 18-06.
Nick Natuhererza’s side also took the second quarter 20-17 and ensured they led by a healthy 15 points at half time.
The third would however belong to JKL as they took it 13-12 and reduced the deficit to 14 points.
At this stage, the damage had already been made and despite winning the fourth 25-18, JKL could not mount a comeback as they lost the contest by 7 points (61-68).
Rose Akon was for the umpteenth time the star of the show for UCU as she registered a double double of 20 points and 19 rebounds, 12 of which were defensive.
Zianah Lokwameri also popped up big-off the bench with 21 points while Sarah Ageno managed 11 (points).
For JKL, Stella Oyella and Ritah Imanishimwe top scored with 16 points each. They were the only two Dolphins to manage double figures on the night.
JKL’s bench was once again disappointing as they managed just 10 points.
Game six of the series will take place at the same venue on Sunday, December 8th.
