Vipers SC are on the verge of winning their 4tth ever Uganda Premier League (UPL) crown.
With just five games to play, the Venoms hold a four-point lead at the top of the UPL and it would take something special to stop them from winning the title.
Even with the COVID-19 situation that may force the league to end pre-maturely, the Kitende based side would still win the league as more than 75% of the games have been playe by each of the 16 teams.
With that (winning the league) looking like it is in check, they however face a relatively trying situation regarding one of their star-players.
The player in question is Geofrey Wasswa, their vice captain who is running out of contract at the end of the current season.
Wasswa has been with the Venoms since 2015 when he signed a five-year deal.
However, the defender has seen his deal run out and is yet to hold renewal-negotiations with the club.
“Wasswa is currently in limbo regarding a new deal, a source revealed to PML Daily.
“He is not sure whether he will stay or leave because Vipers have not offered him a new deal.”
Wasswa has been in and out of the team for most of his career at Vipers, due to injuries.
However, when fit, he is arguably their best defender as he put in inspiring performances.
Wasswa’s versatility enables him to play various positions on the pitch. He can play across the back-line and in midfield.
In the 2019/20 season, he has been one of the best Venoms on the pitch, enabling him earn a national team call-up to the squad that was preparing for the 2020 CHAN Championships in Cameroon before they were postponed.
According to Goal.com, Vipers’ rivals KCCA FC are interested in securing Wasswa and are believed to be keeping close tabs with his current situation.
The Kasasiros believe Wasswa would be the long term replacement to former captain Timothy Awanyi who departed to Israel at last summer.
If he joins KCCA, he would most likely be paired with John Revita at center-back, a duo that would install fear in the eyes of opponents.
