KAMPALA – Express FC went onto the top of the Uganda Premier League – UPL following 4-0 win over Busoga United FC in a game played at the Fufa Technical centre – Njeru on Tuesday.
Godfrey Lwesibawa – noticeably emerged as man of the match after he picked a hat-trick on the day, where Erick Kambale scored the fourth.
The Red Eagles’ performance pushed them onto the top of the UPL table standings after attaining 55 points, one ahead of URA FC – who are a game less at 24 outings and two above Vipers SC, who lost 2-3 to visiting Mbarara City FC at their own backyard at St. Mary’s stadium – Kitende on the same day. Vipers have since launched a campaign to claim maximum points from Mbarara on allegations that the Ankole side fielded a player who had accumulated three yellow cards.
URA travels to face struggling Kyetume FC, today – just like troubled KCCA will be in Bombo to take on UPDF.
Back in Njeru – hosts – Busoga were dominant in the early minutes of the game but Express’ Kambale, Lwesibawa and Martin Kizza proved to be a threat in front of the opponent’s goal. And after 21 minutes – the Red Eagles celebrated their first goal through Lwesibawa, who doubled their lead six minutes – and again – six minutes after recess the visitors stretched the lead to 3-0. Kambale sealed the scoreline to 4-0 13 minutes later.
Express coach Wasswa Bbossa said the result didn’t reflect the true picture of the game – describing Busoga as decent side.
“Don’t be fooled by the result – the game wasn’t an easy; Busoga is a decent side and they have young players but we managed to catch them on the break and score goals.
“We’ve been telling the players to be more – behind the ball and they did it well; we’re now in a good position and now with five games to go – we’re looking at winning each game so that we can stay as competitors,” said Bbossa.
