
Express FC duo of midfielders Ivan Mayanja and Faisal Ssekyanzi, 20 years each were some of the youngest players to feature in the 2020/21 Uganda Premier League (UPL) season.
Mayanja and Ssekyanzi guided Express FC to league triumph as the Wankulukuku based side claimed a seventh league title following the premature ending of the season due to Covid-19 disruptions, but over 75% of the games were played by each team.
The youngsters dubbed the “twins” delight in the club’s league winning season and for Mayanja, the moment is a lasting memory at such an early age.
“It’s so surreal, I joined the club not more than a year ago and for me to have achieved this in my first season is unbelievable,” Mayanja told the club website before thanking the technical team and fellow players for the good job done.
“I have grown on and off the pitch because I have been learning from the senior players, we have a great group of players and we can only get better next season and as an individual, my aim is to play better and more often when I am called upon,” Mayanja added.
For, Ssekyanzi who played six games all off the bench, the wide forward also delights in the team’s league triumph and says that busking in glory is such a great feeling for any athlete.
“Any player would feel fantastic, it’s a huge milestone to win a league title at your first time in the top flight league, it motivates me more and I’m certainly going to push myself and perform better,” Ssekyanzi said adding that he is surrounded by a great group of players who are capable of retaining the title next season.
According to the club website, Mayanja and Ssekyanzi are expected to play an integral part of Coach Wasswa Bbosa’s plans next season having made cameo appearances last season.
