
Ugandan’s 800m Women running pair of Winnie Nanyondo and Halima Nakaayi progressed to the semi-finals of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics on Friday, July 30.
Nanyondo posted a time of 2:02.02 to finish second in Heat one that was won by France’s Renelle Lamote (2:01.92).
The Ugandan however registered the second last time of all the athletes who made it to the semis.
Nakaayi was fourth in heat two in a time of 2:00.92 but missed out on automatic qualification and had to wait for all the six heats to conclude.
The 2019 World Champion’s time was the second fastest of all the athletes who finished outside the top three in their respective heats to book her place in Saturday’s semis.
The semi-finals on Saturday will take place at the Olympic Stadium at 2:50Pm with final slated for Tuesday, August 03.
Meanwhile, Uganda’s Albert Chemutai missed a place in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final after finishing ninth in a time of 8:28.81.
He however became the third Ugandan man after Benjamin Kiplagat and Jacob Araptany to take part in the Steeplechase at the Olympic games.
