Rebecca Chelangat produced a scintillating performance to win the 3rd edition of the Sevilla Half Marathon in Seville, Spain, on Sunday.
The reigning Ugandan 10,000m national champion, 23, broke the course record in emphatic fashion, clocking 1:07:18 to eclipse Ethiopia’s Alemtsehay Bimr Zerihun’s previous mark of 1:07:59 set last year.
Chelangat’s victory marked a significant milestone, as she reduced the record by 41 seconds. This was only her second half marathon, having previously clocked a personal best of 1:10:34 at the Bangsaen21 Half Marathon in 2024.
Compatriot Annet Chemengich Chelangat secured second place with a time of 1:08:17, as Uganda dominated the podium with a 1-2 finish. Ethiopia’s Yalganesh Eskamech Gedefa finished third in 1:08:50.
Chelangat’s triumph earned her a winner’s prize of €2,000 (approximately UGX 7.7 million) and an additional €1,000 (approximately UGX 3.8 million) for breaking the course record.
