KAMPALA, Uganda (PML DAILY) — Uganda Premier League club Express FC fired head coach Baker Mbowa on Saturday, citing a dismal run of results.
Mbowa’s departure comes after a 1-0 home loss to Lugazi, led by interim coach Oliver Mbekeka, Uganda’s first female coach in the top flight. The Red Eagles are currently eighth with eight points from six games, including two losses.
“The management of Express would like to inform the general public that it has parted ways with its head coach Baker Mbowa,” the club said in a statement. “This was after a mutual consent between the two parties.”
Reports indicate Mbowa faced pressure from frustrated fans, prompting him to express safety concerns to club CEO Ashraf Miiro. During a Zoom meeting, Mbowa decided to step down.
Assistant coach Badru Kaddu will take over as interim head coach while the management searches for a permanent replacement. Mike Suleiman Mutyaba, Mbowa’s assistant, will also leave the club.
Mbowa and Mutyaba joined Express FC’s coaching staff on March 4, 2024. Since then, the team has managed only three wins out of 16 games, suffering 11 defeats.
Express FC faces Wakiso Giants on Thursday, with Kaddu seeking to turn around the team’s season.
